Thirst 04:38
Walking alone on bare cracked Earth My shoes worn off my feet Last of my sweat dripping to the dirt Yeah I admit it: I’m in deep Well every mind has a body, every body a soul And all three of mine are weak Fear of death clinging to my bones Yeah I’m swaying in the heat But I don’t want to be remembered this way Dried up on the clay I need someone to get me out of this place Yeah escape my desert grave OoooOoooo Oooo Yeah could I be saved? Cause I’ve got a thirst that could drain this Earth I tell ya I could drink for days OoooOoooo Oooo Yeah could I be saved? Cause I’ve got a thirst that could drain this Earth I tell ya I could drink for days Black Vultures circle above my head They see me grow weak in the knees I know they’ll be fed once I’m dead Yeah I need some kind of relief Well I heard of a water that soaks down to your soul And you never thirst again Water like that could make this dead man whole Yeah could save me from this withered land Cause I don’t want to be remembered this way Dried up on the clay I need someone to get me out of this place Yeah escape my desert grave OoooOoooo Oooo Yeah could I be saved? Cause I’ve got a thirst that could drain this Earth I tell ya I could drink for days OoooOoooo Oooo Yeah could I be saved? Cause I’ve got a thirst that could drain this Earth I tell ya I could drink for days

Easy Prey 04:02
Living out here under the baking sun My skin is clay, my eyes are gone I know I’m easy prey I walk alone on this desert rock My mouth is dry My blood is hot I know I’m easy prey My food is the sand I’m drinking my tears I’ve been living this way out here for years I know I’m easy prey I’ve been hunted down by a rattlesnake The thought of his venom keeps me awake I know I’m easy prey I hear that rattler coming near I’d know that sidewinder anywhere I hear that rattler coming near I’d know that sidewinder….. Anywhere Well he can hunt me down while I’m here But there’s coming a day when I’ll feel no fear Yeah I’ll make it out of this desert alive Til then I’ll take it one day at a time As I scramble over this mountaintop The rattler thinks he's got me caught But I know I’ve got a trick up my sleeve I throw my weight against this broken rock It tumbles down til the trail is block I know It’s time to make my leave I’m running hard on calloused feet Skin so hard I don’t feel the heat Yeah I know My chance is here Well this burning land might be where I roam But I sure as hell never called it home I know I’ll get out of here Well he can hunt me down while I’m here But there’s coming a day when I’ll feel no fear Yeah I’ll make it out of this desert alive Til then I’ll take it one day at a time

Looking out across the heavy dunes Black clouds roll in and replace they sky’s blue I lower my hood and lift my eyes Sun’s pitch black though it’s high in the sky Sand underneath my feet start to shake Dunes split apart under the weight of the earthquake In the rage of the pulsing red thunder The earth gives way as it all goes under So pleasant I’m at peace at the world’s end So pleasant I’m at peace at the world’s end Dark day turns to night and the moon turns to blood Great stars fall like a cosmic flood As chaos fills this wilderness All I feel is restfulness Wind swirls round my aching ears Whispers to me that the end is near A voice inside says I’m not alone When this desert is gone I’m going home Going home So pleasant I’m at peace at the world’s end So pleasant I’m at peace at the world’s end So pleasant I’m at peace at the world’s end So pleasant I’m at peace at the world’s end

Broken Fool 05:01
Sharp, burning sun on my neck Bleach my bones with fire and sweat Dry, Scorched wind which I’ve become akin Steals the sweat from my skin Black, earthen birds circle the sky Perpetually Over a dry, forgotten man half buried in sand Buried from memory Well gather round friend and foe Listen before you go Listen to what I say Look at this broken fool Desire made him a slave Now his bones are cast away He said, “Give me a dollar Give me some smokes I’ll get my kicks tonight I hope Then I’ll be on my way.” He said, “I have no god, I have no soul, We’re all walking down the long black road And I’ll make my own damn way” Like shattered jars scattered in the sand Are the plans of a man The broken shards made whole once again By the Lord’s hand Tall, crooked trees With shadows longer than me Drink from this cracked clay Amongst them lies the bones Of the man Who went his own way Well gather round friend and foe Listen before you go Listen to what I say Look at this broken fool Desire made him a slave Now his bones are cast away He said, “Give me a dollar Give me some smokes I’ll get my kicks tonight I hope Then I’ll be on my way.” He said, “I have no god, I have no soul, We’re all walking down the long black road And I’ll make my own damn way” Like shattered jars scattered in the sand Are the plans of a man The broken shards made whole once again By the Lord’s hand Like shattered jars scattered in the sand Are the plans of a man The broken shards made whole once again

Dark Canyons 06:54
The Dark Canyons that lay between us If I filled them with my grief Would you acknowledge the ways you hurt me Would you walk on it to get to me The sharp ridges built between us If I shattered them with my screams Would you make your way through the rubble Or would you even hear me Yeah I know the nights get cold out here There are howls in the distance I’m sleeping in fear But we could keep each other warm If we throw our pride in a whole in the ground Bury it in a way it can’t be found Then maybe we could see eye to eye Yeah I know the nights get cold out here There are howls in the distance I’m sleeping in fear But we could keep each other warm If we throw our pride in a whole in the ground Bury it in a way it can’t be found Then maybe we could see eye to eye Yeah I know the nights get cold out here There are howls in the distance I’m sleeping in fear But we could keep each other warm If we throw our pride in a whole in the ground Bury that shit so it can’t be found Then maybe we could see eye to eye Interlude The dark canyon I dug before me I made it so I can’t reach The God who loves me deeply The only one who won’t leave He has split himself open Filled this canyon with his blood He’s crossed over the ways I hurt him So he could wrap me in his love Yeah I know the nights get cold out here But it’s warm in his arms with nothing to fear And I don’t have to hide Cause I found a Father, a God, a friend Whose kindness, protection, and love won’t end I could stay here Yeah I know the nights get cold out here But it’s warm in his arms with nothing to fear And I don’t have to hide Cause I found a Father, a God, a friend Whose kindness, protection, and love won’t end I could stay here

about

Phillip Stone's debut album, Dark Canyons. The first in a planned series of three narrative concept albums, Dark Canyons is a vast desert where those lost in it must fight the elements, the wild, and their waning hope. With themes of thirst, desire, being hunted, and closing your eyes at the end of the world, the album is intended to be as encompassing as the Dark Canyons itself.
